Canon have today announced the EOS RP joining the EOS R in the R Series line up as a smaller, more compact, entry-level full frame mirrorless camera, perfect for travellers or those needing a much lighter setup. The RP is Canon’s smallest, lightest, full frame digital camera to date. Just as the EOS R, the RP features the RF Mount with its high speed 12-pin communication system, short back focus and wide 54mm mount diameter and can also be paired with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses using the EF-EOS R mount adapter.
Features
- 2 Megapixel full frame CMOS sensor
- Lightweight body with magnesium alloy chassis
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF
- 4K Movie
- DIGIC 8 processor
- Three EF-EOS R adapter
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The Canon RP includes a full frame 26.2MP CMOS sensor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 4779 selectable AF positions, a DIGIC 8 image processor and a native ISO range of 100-40000. At 485g the EOS RP is approximately 175g lighter than the EOS R. But doesn’t include the touch bar or dot-matrix LCD Screen that the EOS R does, the RP does however feature a 3 inch 1.04MP touchscreen vari-angle LCD, with 7 levels of adjustable brightness. Touch and Drag AF makes it quick and easy to select a focus point without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder, with the touchscreen LCD its as simple as pointing to the desired area of focus. The RP features a high precision 0.39 inch OLED EVF with approximately 2.36 million dots and a 22mm eye point, the brightness of the EVF and the LCD monitor can also be adjusted individually which is a first for an EOS camera.
The EOS RP features 4K recording up to 25fps, although with a crop of around 1.6x and Full HD at 60fps, with the RP you also can’t use the Dual Pixel CMOS AF when shooting in 4K the same as the EOS M50. The camera includes 5 axis movie stabilisation to counteract shake when shooting handheld, it also features 4K time-lapse, interval timer, Movie Servo AF and HDR movies. The RP features a mini HDMI connector as well as headphone, microphone and USB-C ports. The battery is the LP-E17 used in Canon’s smaller models which gives around 250 shots per charge and the same as with the EOS R there is only one memory card slot.
The nearest DSLR alternative to the EOS RP is the 6D Mark II and you can see the comparisons below

Also announced today was the development of 6 new RF Mount lenses due to be released throughout 2019, to join the 4 already announced last year. The RF 15-35mm f2.8 IS USM, RF 24-70mm f2.8 L IS USM and RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM, which feature an f2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range to facilitate easy adjustment of settings such as the exposure.
Two new medium telephoto fixed focal length lenses, RF 85mm f1.2 L USM and RF 85mm f1.2 L USM DS with a fast f1.2 aperture delivering distinct bokeh effects when shooting wide open.
Finally the compact and lightweight 24-240mm f4-6.3 IS USM which covers an extensive zoom range, making it suitable for varied shooting scenarios. Prices and additional spec are yet to be announced but we look forward to these being released and adding to an impressive RF line up.
The EOS RP body with EF adapter is priced at £1399.99 inc VAT, or as a kit with the 24-105mm RF f4 lens for £2329.99 inc VAT both are available to pre-order from CVP now.
