Canon have today taken their first steps into the full frame mirrorless market with the announcement of the Canon EOS R range. The EOS R features a brand new RF mount, 30.3MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor with a maximum of 5655 manually selectable AF points.

At the heart of the new EOS R system is the RF mount, designed to deliver the ideal combination of speed, durability and flexibility in optical design for excellent performance and future system expansion. Canon have initially released four RF lenses, including an industry first 28-70mm f2.

EOS R
The Canon EOS R features a full-frame 30.3 Megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor which focuses without compromise thanks to its advanced phase detection system allowing the user to select between 5655 AF positions.

The EOS R offers a comfortable and familiar EOS handgrip with a high degree of customisation, superb weather proofing and vari-angle screen. The camera features a dot-matrix LCD panel on top to check the camera status and settings with ease. A multi-function touch bar also allows easy customisation of various camera settings with a swipe or tap.

Operating in light as low as EV-6, the EOS R camera’s ultra-sensitive AF delivers amazing performance in remarkably dark areas.

For those of you interested in the video capabilities of the EOS R you are able to shoot 4K up to 30fps or Full HD 1080p up to 60fps. Focus with Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus and deliver stunning 4K video footage via a HDMI output in 10-bit for the ultimate in high quality and grading possibilities.

The EOS R boasts Canon Log, a recording setting that captures footage in neutral contrast with up to 12-stops of dynamic range at ISO 400 allowing post production grading to extract every subtle nuance of colour and detail in shadow and highlights. Additionally, advanced Digital Movie IS provides 5-axis image stabilisation, giving the ultimate in smooth, shake free footage.

RF Lenses
A brand new mount means new lenses and Canon have released four new lenses. All RF lenses feature a control ring that lets you assign features and quickly change settings without having to use the main dial or quick control dial on the camera body.

RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM
The RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM is versatile with its broad zoom range and constant f4 aperture. It’s the first L series lens to feature Canon’s fast and speedy NANO USM, making it ideal for landscapes, portraits and more.

RF 28-70mm f2 L USM
The RF 28-70mm f2 L USM features a maximum aperture of f2 offering a completely new shooting experience and unparalleled performance throughout. With L series optics it offers edge-to-edge resolution even at the maximum aperture.

RF 50mm f1.2 L USM
The RF 50mm f1.2 L USM lens provides stunning resolution and high image quality even at the maximum aperture of f1.2. Its f1.2 aperture means amazing performance in low light and gorgeous, detailed images with evocative background blur.

RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM
Compact and lightweight, the RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM offers amazing versatility in a wide-angle macro lens. It has a 0.5x magnification ratio and a close focusing distance of 0.56ft / 0.71m for excellent macro photography.

For existing Canon users who already own EF lenses, Canon are also releasing three mount adapters allowing the use of Canon EF lenses with the EOS R without any loss of quality, including one with a customisable control ring and another allowing you to drop in a circular polarising filter or variable ND filter. The good news is the standard EF to RF adapter is included with the body only and kit version of the camera.

The EOS R is available as a body only for £2349.98 inc VAT or as a kit with the new RF 24-105mm lens for £3269.99 inc VAT.

Both are available for pre-order from CVP now a long with the four new lenses and mount adapters.
