Sony 50Mb/s range expands with new PMW-150 camcorder

In a perhaps unsurprising move Sony have today announced the introduction of their third 50Mb/s handheld HD camcorder in the form of the PMW-150.

The camera slots neatly into their line-up in between the PMW-100 and 200 (no surprise there!) and features 3 x 1/3″ Exmor CMOS sensors, integrated 20x zoom lens with three independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris… Crucially, internal recording includes a broadcaster-friendly 50Mb/s / 4:2:2 codec and utilises Sony’s SxS media for which there are 2 card slots for continuous recording capability.

A slightly closer look at the camera reveals that its sensors are all-new devices with a native resolution that allows full-HD output without pixel interpolation.  Sensitivity is a very healthy f/9 at 2,000 lux and the quoted s/n (signal-to-noise) ratio of 54dB promises high quality, low noise images.

Connectivity is excellent with HDMI, HD-SDI, FireWire and analogue all available via the rear panel (see image above) and in addition to this, from November an optional CBK-WA01 Wireless Adaptor (Wi-Fi) can be added in order to allow wireless remote control of many camera / lens settings and functions from a wide range of Android based devices as well as iPhones and iPads.  The CBK-WA01 is readily attached to the camera handle using the included bracket and plugs into the camera’s ‘option (USB host)’ socket.

UK list price is approximately £4,400+VAT, so it’s fair to expect a street price of just under £4,000+VAT , making the PMW-150 an incredibly attractive package.

  1. Do you know what the iPhone software is called ?( Quote ) CBK-WA01 Wireless Adaptor (Wi-Fi) can be added in order to allow wireless remote control of many camera / lens settings and functions from a wide range of Android based devices as well as iPhones and iPads

    1. You must have the Sony XMPilot application installed on your Apple iOS and/or Google Android device.

Here is the link to the Apple iOS application:
      https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xmpilot-tool/id479801887?mt=8

Here is the link to the Google Android application:

Currently this application is designed to provide wireless metadata entry and manipulation with the Sony “XMPilot” enabled camcorders. However at IBC 2012, Sony did show a technology demonstration of the same hardware and software application controlling the in-camera functions.
